I love red wine! I love the nose, the flavors, the layered complexities, the way it tastes on your front, mid and back palette. So where did this love of wine come from?
I didn’t grow up around wine or alcohol of any kind. I don’t think I had my first sip of wine until 2011 or 2012. I was in my late 40’s! We had decided not to have it in the house while raising our girls, but when our youngest was a Junior or Senior in high school a friend had us over for a dinner party. She called ahead of time to ask if it was OK with us if she served wine. I said, “Of course!” and really enjoyed it. It was relaxing and made the food taste even better. I began by buying a bottle once in a while at Target or Costco, having no clue what to buy. But then in June of 2012 we moved to Southern California. We began exploring our new state. New friends kept asking, “You haven’t been to Napa??” So we went. I was so intimidated! I didn’t know what to do or how to act in a tasting room. It felt super awkward. But my desire to learn wine made me press on. I realized I lived in a state that produced some of the best wine in the world. And I was hooked! Napa is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. We began making appointments to tour and taste at wineries. I was fascinated by all of it and loved learning about wine. It soon became a passion. I could get lost for hours online finding new places to visit. Now 6 1/2 years later I’m still loving Napa but discovering that the Central Coast of California has some amazing wine too, and it’s way more down-to-earth and accessible financially. Plus it’s closer!
I get quite a few emails from friends asking questions about wine, where they should visit in Paso Robles and Napa. I found that I loved attempting to answer their questions and it allowed me to grow in my knowledge of wine. It was my daughters who suggested I start a blog. This was over two years ago. I thought, “No way! I don’t know anything, I’m not a good writer, yada, yada, yada.” They wouldn’t let up. Every time I told them a fun fact about wine they would say, “That would be a great blog post!” They even came up with the name for my blog. And so here we are. One of my goals for 2019 is to step out of my comfort zone. Cheers to new beginnings!
